Real human writing has bursts. Short. Then long. Then medium. Then a one-word punch.
AI loves the middle: 15–22 word sentences, almost every one. Run a quick eye-test — if every sentence is roughly the same length, that's your first red flag.
2. The "transition tic"#
ChatGPT especially has a tic. It opens paragraphs with "Furthermore," "Moreover," "Additionally," "In conclusion." Real humans rarely use these in conversational writing.
Look at the first word of every paragraph. If 3+ use these stiff openers in a row, you're reading AI-generated text.
3. Suspiciously balanced structure#
AI loves "5 reasons," "7 ways," "3 key points." It loves bulleted lists that hit exactly 3 or 5 items every time. It loves bolded headings with title case throughout.
Real human writers vary. Some sections have 2 points, some have 6. Some skip lists entirely.
4. Zero personal anecdotes#
Here's a big one: AI models almost never share a real, specific, time-stamped personal experience. They'll write "I once had a client..." in vague terms. But you won't find "Last Tuesday, on the 11:42am train from Karachi to Lahore..."
If the writing has emotion, but no concrete personal detail — strong AI signal.
5. Hedging language overload#
AI hedges. A lot.
"It's important to note..." "Generally speaking..." "In many cases..." "It depends on..."
Sprinkle a few in a piece — fine. But if every paragraph hedges, the writer was probably an LLM trying to avoid making a confident claim it couldn't back up.
6. "Em-dash overload"#
This one's industry inside-baseball: GPT-class models leave em-dashes — like this one — everywhere. AI text detection tools key on this heavily because real human writers use commas, semicolons, or parentheses for the same job.
Count em-dashes per 500 words. More than 3? AI signal.
7. The vibe check#
After 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — read the piece out loud. Does it sound like a person on a phone call, or a corporate consultant presenting slides?
