What is the Profit Margin Calculator?

A profit margin calculator computes the spread between cost and revenue -but most online tools only handle one direction. This one ships three modes: margin from cost+revenue, required revenue from cost+target margin, and revenue from cost+markup. Plus break-even analysis, tax-inclusive math, bulk CSV processing, and industry benchmarks.

Margin and markup confuse most folks: margin = profit / revenue, markup = profit / cost. A 50% markup is only a 33.33% margin. The calculator shows both side by side so you stop quoting one and meaning the other.

How it works

Step 1
Pick a mode
From cost+revenue, from target margin, or from markup. Each works backward to find the missing variable.
Step 2
See margin + markup + profit
Side-by-side comparison so you never confuse the two metrics again.
Step 3
Benchmark + break-even
Compare against 10 industries, run break-even, or process a CSV of products in bulk.

Features

Margin + Markup side by side
Stop confusing the two. 50% markup is only 33.33% margin. We show both.
3 computation modes
Backward-solve for revenue from target margin or markup, or compute margin from cost+revenue.
Break-even calculator
Fixed + variable + price → break-even unit volume + contribution margin.
Industry benchmarks
10 industries: SaaS, restaurant, retail, manufacturing, consulting, freelance, etc.
Bulk CSV processing
Paste cost, revenue, product rows. Get margins for hundreds of products at once.
Tax-inclusive helper
Extract net from gross, or add VAT/GST/sales tax to net. 2-way math.
9 currencies
USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, INR, PKR, AED, JPY -proper formatting.
Browser only
All math runs locally. Cost, revenue, margin numbers stay on your device.

Who uses it

Retailers / e-commerce
Pricing for target margin, comparing supplier costs, finding underperformers in product catalog.
Founders
Modeling unit economics, break-even, pitch deck financial projections.
Freelancers / agencies
Hourly rate calibration. Effective margin after overhead = hourly - overhead-per-hour.
Finance students
Margin vs markup, contribution margin, break-even -hands-on with instant feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Is the profit margin calculator free?

Yes. Unlimited use, no signup. Calculator.net is free but only does one direction (cost+revenue → margin). This one ships three modes (margin from cost+revenue, revenue from cost+margin, revenue from cost+markup), break-even, tax-inclusive math, and bulk CSV.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Margin = profit / revenue. Markup = profit / cost. They're often confused. Example: cost $100, revenue $150 = 33.33% margin, 50% markup. Many product folks quote markup but think they're quoting margin -the calculator shows both side by side.

How do I price for a target margin?

Use the 'From margin' mode. Enter cost + target margin %, get the required revenue. Formula: revenue = cost / (1 - margin/100). For 40% margin on $100 cost, you need $166.67 revenue.

What's a good profit margin?

Depends on industry. SaaS: 70-85% gross. Restaurants: 3-12% net. Retail: 40-60% gross. The 'Industry benchmarks' panel shows typical ranges for 10 industries to compare your numbers against.

Can I calculate break-even?

Yes. Switch to break-even mode. Enter fixed costs + price per unit + variable cost per unit, get the unit volume needed to break even. Formula: units = fixed / (price - variable).

How does the tax-inclusive mode work?

Switch to the tax helper. Enter a gross price (tax included) and tax rate, see the net price and tax amount. Or enter net + rate to add tax. Useful for VAT, GST, sales tax.

Can I process bulk products via CSV?

Yes. Paste or upload a CSV with columns: cost, revenue, product. Get margin, markup, profit per row. Sort by margin to find underperformers. Browser-only, no upload to any server.

Which currencies are supported?

9 currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, INR, PKR, AED, JPY. Display only -math is currency-agnostic. Switch via the currency picker, all numbers reformat with proper symbols.

Does it account for variable costs / overhead?

Basic mode: cost is total cost of goods (COGS). Break-even mode separates fixed (rent, salaries) from variable (per-unit material). For pricing decisions, include allocated overhead in 'cost' for a fully-loaded margin.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser. CSV uploads are parsed locally, never sent to a server. Cost / revenue / margin numbers stay on your device.
