What is the Tax Bracket Calculator?

A tax bracket calculator shows you exactly how progressive taxation breaks down for your income. Most people understand brackets in theory but mis-estimate their actual tax because they confuse marginal rates (the rate on your last dollar) with effective rates (the rate you actually pay on your whole income). This calculator shows both, plus the bracket-by-bracket breakdown.

8 jurisdictions: US Federal (single filer), California, New York, Texas, Florida, Washington, UK, and Canada federal. 2024 rates. Optional deduction input. Browser-only -your income data never leaves the page.

How it works

Step 1
Pick a jurisdiction
US federal, 5 high-pop states, UK, Canada. Each loads the correct 2024 brackets.
Step 2
Enter income + deductions
Gross income and optional deduction (standard or itemized).
Step 3
See the breakdown
Total tax, take-home, effective rate, marginal rate, bracket-by-bracket math.

Features

8 jurisdictions
US Federal, CA, NY, TX, FL, WA, UK, Canada federal. 2024 rates.
Bracket-by-bracket math
See exactly how much each bracket contributes to your tax bill. No black box.
Marginal + effective rate
Both rates clearly distinguished. Most calculators show one and confuse you.
Deductions input
Subtract standard or itemized deductions before bracketing. Realistic take-home.
Take-home pay
Gross income minus tax = take-home. The number you actually live on.
Visual breakdown
Each bracket shown with the income range, rate, and dollars contributed.
No-state-tax states flagged
Texas, Florida, Washington explicitly shown as 0% to remove ambiguity.
Browser only
Income, deductions, computed tax all stay on your laptop. We don't run a server.

Why this calculator

Marginal vs effective

Most people don't know the difference. Most calculators don't help. We show both, prominently labeled.

No upsell

SmartAsset and TaxAct gate features behind paid filing. We do math, no promotions, no email gate.

Multi-jurisdiction

US, UK, Canada in one tool. Useful for remote workers and international employees.

Browser-only

Your income is private. Other calculators log it. We never see it.

Who uses it

Salaried employees
Estimating year-end tax, comparing offers across states.
Freelancers
Planning quarterly estimated tax payments based on YTD income.
Remote workers
Comparing UK vs US vs Canada take-home for the same gross.
Students
Learning how progressive taxation actually works, beyond just 'rich pay more'.

Real use cases

  • You got a job offer at $180K and want to estimate take-home. Plug in $180K + $14,600 standard deduction. US Federal tax is ~$33K, effective rate 18.5%, marginal 24%. Take-home before state ~$147K.
  • Same offer in California vs Texas. CA adds ~$13K state tax (effective 7.4% on top of federal). TX adds nothing. CA take-home ~$134K, TX ~$147K. $13K/yr difference for the same nominal salary.
  • You're considering a UK remote role at £80K. Calculator shows £19K tax, take-home £61K, effective rate 23.6%. Compare to your home jurisdiction.
  • You moonlight at $25K side income. Add to your day-job income, see the marginal rate jump. Most side income gets taxed at your top bracket -usually 24-32%.
  • Your accountant says you're in 'the 24% bracket'. Calculator confirms 24% is your marginal but your effective is much lower (~18%). Now you understand what they meant.
  • You're explaining tax brackets in a personal-finance class. Walk through bracket-by-bracket on a $100K income. First slice 10%, next 12%, top 22%. Effective rate is just 14% even though their highest bracket is 22%.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tax calculator free?

Yes. Unlimited use, no signup. SmartAsset and TaxAct have free calculators but heavily push paid filing services; we do tax math only and stay out of your way.

Which jurisdictions are supported?

US Federal (single filer), California, New York, Texas, Florida, Washington (last three have no state income tax), UK (England/Wales/NI), Canada federal. 2024 rates. Add state + federal manually for combined.

What's the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Marginal = the rate on your last dollar earned (the bracket you're in). Effective = total tax divided by gross income (the rate you actually pay on your whole income). Most people confuse them. Effective is always lower than marginal.

Why does my tax look low for $200K income?

Brackets are progressive. The first $11,600 is taxed at 10%, the next chunk at 12%, etc. Even at $200K, only the top slice gets the highest rate. The bracket-by-bracket breakdown shows you exactly how much each layer contributes.

Are deductions handled?

Single deduction input that subtracts from gross before bracketing. Use it for the standard deduction ($14,600 US single in 2024) or itemized deductions. We don't model specific credits like child tax credit or earned income credit.

What about FICA / Medicare / NI?

Not modeled. The calculator does income-tax brackets only. Add ~7.65% for FICA (US) or ~12% for NI (UK) for a complete take-home estimate.

Are these the right rates for 2025?

We update rates annually. As of the 2024 brackets shown. For 2025 figures, the IRS publishes inflation-adjusted brackets each November; we'll roll them in when published.

Does this replace my tax software?

No. This shows tax bracket math. Real tax filing involves credits, phase-outs, AMT, capital gains, retirement contributions, state-specific deductions. Use this for planning and quick estimates, your tax software for filing.

Married filing jointly?

Not yet. Current version is single-filer only. MFJ brackets are roughly double the single-filer thresholds. We'll add MFJ + Head of Household + MFS in a follow-up.

Is my income data sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. Your income, deductions, and computed tax stay on your laptop. No upload, no log, no third-party analytics on the input.
